PROBLEMS OF PROGRAMMING AUTOMATION IN THE ESTONIAN SSR,

Abstract

The primary purpose of the studies reported in the paper was to develop automatic programming systems using algorithmic languages of higher levels and translators which would make it possible to realize on small electronic computers any algorithm written in a corresponding language. A basic trend has been toward the development of ALGOL-type systems. The problem was reduced to the determination of an ALGOL subset on the basis of which it would be possible to solve a wide class of problems, to simplify the structure and syntax of the language, and to realize a corresponding translator using small Minsk- and Ural-type computers. The MALGOL system was proposed which satisfied the above-mentioned requirements; it has been used primarly on the M-3, Minsk-2, and Minsk-22 computers. The paper describes the MALGOL peculiarities and points out the differences between it and the ALGOL system.
