Abstract

It is shown that a code which determines the position of an individual subunit containing up to e errors should satisfy the following conditions: (1) a syndrome calculated in the presence of e or fewer errors within any individual subunit should be different from a zero syndrome; (2) a syndrome calculated in the presence of e or fewer errors within an individual subunit should be different from the syndrome, calculated in the presence of another combination of e or less errors within any other subunit.
