ISOTOPE SOURCES OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY FOR POWERING AUTOMATIC METEOROLOGICAL STATIONS,

Abstract

The paper presents a brief description and the main specifications of two isotopic power supplies (Beta-1 and Beta-2) designed for use with the automatic meteorological station type ARMS-N. They are built around a working container that includes a sealed ampoule with the radiactive isotope, placed in a tungsten vessel. The heat actuates a pile consisting of a series of semiconductor thermocouples. The Beta-1 unit delivers 5 watts at 3.4 V for 1 year, while the Beta-2 delivers 5.3 W at 5.0 V for 10 years. The Beta-1 uses Ce144 and the Beta-2 Sr90 as the radioactive isotopes. A container for transporting the source is also included.
