THE SAWTOOTH COLUMN OF THE SUPERSONIC ELECTRIC ARC IN SULFUR HEXAFLUORIDE.
Abstract
A fine sawtooth structure is reported for the slanted supersonic electric arc in sulfur hexafluoride. This structure results in an apparent crossflow Mach number for the arc column which can be considerably higher than the actual crossflow Mach number. Experimental observations indicate that for arc Mach numbers from 1.3 to 5.4, the actual crossflow Mach number is very nearly equal to unity. Two models for the sawtooth column are considered. Agreement is found between the sawtooth models and experimental observations. Implications for the mechanism of column slanting are discussed. (Author)
