APPARATUS AND TRAINING PROGRAM FOR STUDYING IMMEDIATE EFFECTS OF RETINAL DAMAGE IN THE RHESUS MONKEY (MACACA MULATTA).
Abstract
The purpose of the study was to develop apparatus and training techniques to prepare rhesus monkeys for a study of the immediate effects of retinal damage upon visual acuity. The subjects were trained to a level of 90 to 100 percent correct responses in the avoidance-punishment program with stimuli requiring 20/100 visual acuity. Subjects were then placed in a head restraint apparatus and they viewed the stimuli through tubes. This technique and supporting apparatus allowed the rapid presentation of stimuli to either the right or left eye. The criterion of 90 to 100 percent correct responses was maintained under these conditions. (Author)
