EVALUATION OF CARPENTER PYROMET X-15,

Abstract

Pyromet X-15 is a high-strength precipitation hardening stainless steel which can be heat treated to 240 ksi. The mechanical properties of the 240 ksi level is good but the fracture toughness is very low. The smooth fatigue life is comparable to other steels at the same strength level. The stress rupture strength is good at 700F but the material becomes thermally embrittled when held for long times at this temperature. This material is not recommended for structural applications where high toughness is required or where the service temperature approaches 700F. (Author)
