AN INVESTIGATION OF NONUNIFORM HYPERSONIC FREE-STREAM FLOWS ABOUT BLUNT AXISYMMETRIC BODIES.

Abstract

The effect of selected nonuniform free-stream density and velocity profiles on the hypersonic flow field about a spherically blunted cone was investigated using a computer program. The program uses an iterated inverse method on the subsonic-transonic region and a modification of the method of characteristics in the supersonic region. Nonuniformity of the principal free-stream variables is provided by means of a bivariate fit using the center-line values. Results are presented which demonstrate that the computer program will provide reasonable predictions of the effects of the specific nonuniform free streams investigated. In addition, results are presented which show that these nonuniform free streams can have a significant effect upon the resultant flow field, particularly upon shock shape and body surface pressure distribution in the supersonic region.
