AN OPTICAL INSTRUMENT FOR MEASURING PRESSURE WITHIN A CLOSED CYLINDRICAL QUARTZ TUBE CONTAINING XENON,

Abstract

An optical instrument for measuring the pressure within a closed cylindrical quartz tube containing xenon at absolute pressures above one atmosphere has been developed. It utilizes the relatively large variation in refractive index of xenon with pressure which results in a measurable variation of the critical angle at the quartz-to-xenon interface. The instrument permits the rapid determination of the pressure to within one atmosphere. Detailed computations regarding optimizing of parameters are included. (Author)
