OPENING UP CLOSINGS,

Abstract

The paper discusses methods that have been developed for analyzing closings in conversation. Several problems are discussed that derive from earlier research on conversation formulations. An initial problem is derived from a consideration of the most basic features of conversation that are known. A partial solution is developed. Problematic aspects of that solution lead to another problem that further illuminates the data about closings. After relating the two problems, an attempt is made to specify the domain for which the closing problems, as they have been posed, seem apposite. (Author)
