EVALUATION OF CARPENTER CUSTOM 455,

Abstract

Custom 455 is a commercially available proprietary alloy. It is a precipitation hardenable stainless stell that can be heat treated to a tensile strength of 260 ksi. The fatigue, and general corrosion properties are good and the resistance to stress corrosion in a 3-1/2% NaCl environment is excellent. The fracture toughness at a strength level of 240 ksi is 72 ksi square root of (in.). The combination of excellent properties and low cost ($1.05 per lb.) makes this alloy attractive for structural applications. (Author)
