GRAPHS OF SELECTED DATA FROM SATELLITE 1963 38C FOR 1967.

Abstract

Satellite 1963 38C was launched on September 28, 1963 into a circular, polar orbit at 1100 km altitude. Its instrumentation includes silicon surface barrier detectors, designed to measure mirroring electrons and protons, and Li-drifted cubes for omnidirectional measurement. The electron spectrometer measures integral flux for Ee = or > 0.28, 1.2, 2.4, and 3.6 Mev. The proton spectrometer measures protons with energies in the ranges 1.2 to 2.2, 2.2 to 8.2, 8.2 to 25, and 25 to 100 Mev. Three omnidirectional detectors measure fluxes of particles for which Ee greater than 0.28 Mev, Ep greater than 2.2 Mev; Ee greater than 0.41 Mev, Ep greater than 8.5 Mev; and Ee greater than 1.8 Mev, Ep greater than 25 Mev. At the time of the preparation of this report (winter 1968/1969) the satellite had functioned extremely well for more than five years, and its eventual demise could not be inferred from the data quality. In the first five volumes, raw data from 1963 through 1967 are presented versus time and B(the magnitude of the local magnetic field) for selected L (a parameter approximately constant along lines of force) values (1.20 = or < L = or < 20 earth radii).
