HUMAN ABILITY TO ESTIMATE TARGET LOCATIONS WITH RESPECT TO TWO POINTS.
Abstract
Two coordinate systems, polar and rectangular, were compared in an experiment in which undergraduate students estimated the coordinates of a target on an unstructured map showing the target point and two reference points. The reference points were oriented either conventionally (i.e., horizontally or vertically) or randomly. Both gross errors (e.g., wrong quadrant) and inaccuracies, exclusive of gross errors, were analyzed. (Author)
