THE GROUPING OF SPECTRAL LINES IN THE OPTICAL SPECTRA OF Gd(3+) IN CaF2 ACCORDING TO COMMON SITES.
Abstract
The spectral lines arising from the transitions between the octet S(7/2) ground state and the sextet P(7/2) (32100/cm) and sextet P(5/2) (32700/cm) manifolds of Gd(3+) in CaF2 at 77K are grouped according to the sites to which they belong. The classification is based on the relative line strengths or integrated absorption coefficients by which lines can be grouped according to common sites, but does not yield the symmetries of these sites. The effects of the Gd(3+) within the sample on the relative strengths of the identified sites are reported for the nominal dopings of 0.5, 0.1, and 0.05 mole per cent. The integrated absorption coefficients, wavelengths in air, and vacuum wavenumbers of the sextet P(7/2) and sextet P(5/2) groups are reported. Wavelengths in air and vacuum wavenumbers of the sextet I group in absorption and the sextet P(7/2) and sextet I(7/2) in fluorescence are also included. (Author)
