STABILITY OF HIGH-FREQUENCY OSCILLATIONS IN ARBITRARY PLASMA CONFIGURATIONS.
Abstract
The paper deals with the application of a theory devised by Taylor and Hastie to the range of high-frequency oscillations in a fully ionized plasma. The shapes of both the perturbances and the equilibria on which they are superimposed are left geometrically arbitrary, and collisions are accounted for by means of a Krook-type collision term. The linearized Boltzmann equation is solved for the perturbed distribution function in the lowest order with respect to a small expansion parameter, and a generalized dispersion relation is derived by means of Poisson's equation. Then Nyquist plots are used to determine whether or not this relation is satisfied for some omega located in the 'unstable' lower omega half-plane. Important general properties of the relevant Nyquist plots are stated, and a more detailed expression is given for the collisionless case. (Author)
