NORMAL MODES FOR DRIFT WAVES IN ADIABATIC PLASMAS.

Abstract

The normal modes for electrostatic waves in an inhomogeneous low-beta plasma are investigated under the assumption of adiabatic oscillations. A two-fluid model is used and electron inertia and finite electrical conductivity are taken into account. The dispersion relation obtained is discussed for the limits of perpendicular and nearly parallel propagation, respectively, with respect to the magnetic field. For small parallel wavenumbers the dispersion relation is discussed numerically and dispersion curves are obtained. It is found that the modes present in an isothermal plasma are only slightly changed. Besides them two new drift waves occur which are stable according to linear theory. For sufficiently large parallel wavenumbers they go over into acoustic waves. (Author)
