DETERMINATION OF THE TRANSVERSE MOMENTUM EXCHANGE PER UNIT ARC LENGTH.

Abstract

For any arbitrarily shaped, stationary curved arc column in an externally applied magnetic field, the momentum exchange per unit arc length and unit time through the arc surface area is counteracted by the Maxwell stress tensor over the same surface area. It is argued that this local balance of forces is independent of the forces on the endplanes of the entire discharge column. After determining the total magnetic field at a distance r from the axis, one can calculate the transverse components of the momentum exchange to a first order approximation. This is done by substituting the magnetic field components into the expression for the Maxwell stress tensor and then integrating over the arc surface element. Final expressions for the two transverse components are given. (Author)
