DIGITIZING MICROBAROGRAPH DATA.

Abstract

The report describes a technique for converting ESSA analog microbarograph data into a computer compatible, digital format. Data detected by the microbarograph array are recorded on magnetic tape at a central recording site, having been transmitted over telephone lines as frequency-modulated (FM) signals. The array selected for testing the technique is located at Huancayo, Peru, and is operated by the Instituto Geofisico del Peru. At the central recording site the signals are demodulated and recorded as amplitude-modulated (AM) signals. In order to analyze the extremely slow speed AM signal on a digital computer, the analog signal must be translated into a digital format for input to the computer. The analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) of such signals requires the development of a technique and the documentation of that technique is the purpose of this report. (Author)
