SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF INTERMEDIATE COMPOUNDS INVOLVED IN THE ELECTROCHEMICAL REDUCTION OF M-DINITROBENZENE.

Abstract

The mechanism for the electrochemical reduction of m-dinitrobenzene is discussed, with special attention being placed upon the pH dependence of the reduction. The synthesis and characterization of several of the intermediate compounds involved in the postulated reaction sequence are described. Compounds included in this were m-dinitrobenzene, m-nitronitrosobenzene, m-nitrophenylhydroxylamine, m-nitroaniline, m,m'-dinitroazoxybenzene, m,m'-dinitroazobenzene, and m-phenylenediamine.
