THE THERAPY OF EXPERIMENTAL HEMORRHAGIC SHOCK WITH RED CELL STROMA FREE HEMOGLOBIN SOLUTION.

Abstract

Four groups of 10 dogs were given different resuscitation fluids after a period of deep hypotension following severe hemorrhage. Dextran, whole blood, and stroma free hemoglobin solution were equally effective in restoring acid base balance and prolonging survival. Isotonic saline infusion was clearly inferior. Stroma free hemoglobin solution appeared to be a promising emergency transfusion fluid, even though the oxygen delivering capacity of the hemoglobin preparation we used was only a small fraction of that previously reported. On the basis of this data and with improvement in O2 delivering capacity of hemoglobin function, further investigation of this resuscitation fluid is warranted. (Author)
