CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE PHYSICS OF HIGH ENERGY DENSITY,

Abstract

The report presents summaries of some papers on theoretical investigations in the physics of extreme pressure and temperature. The Mie-Gruneisen equation of state, which is appropriate for high pressure and moderate temperature, is briefly discussed in Paper 1. Paper 2 contains a study of the properties under astrophysical conditions by means of the statistical (Thomas-Fermi-Kirzhnits) model of the atom. These results are used in Paper 3 to calculate cross sections for absorption of electromagnetic radiation. The process studied is the 'inverse bremsstrahlung'. Paper 4 treats some similarity properties of high pressure time-dependent flow. High pressure motion is the subject also of Paper 5, in which the first stage of the expansion of a fission charge is treated in an approximate way. The last paper (6) discusses the effects of a high-altitude nuclear explosion on a ballistic missile. The thermal and mechanical damages are considered, and the destruction radius is estimated.
