THE EFFECTS ON THE LEGIBILITY OF MAPS OF INCREASING INFORMATION.
Abstract
The aims of the project have been to develop objective design standards for mapping that will increase the legibility and the amount of information that can be placed on maps. Such objectives are relevant to the process of making the maximum amount and types of terrain data available to the commander in the field; and further they enhance the legibility of maps. Three separate phases have been undertaken in the project: Pseudo maps - their preparation, testing and significance; overhead projections as a means of cartographic display; and a dictionary of cartographic forms and methods. The present report is confined essentially to the first of these phases. (Author)
