ON AUTOMATING TURBINE BLADE FINISHING,

Abstract

Since conventional automation methods cannot be used for turbine-blade manufacture because these blades are produced in small lots, programmed finishing should be used in their manufacture. In this connection, a stand was designed consisting of a turn table, to which the mock-up blade-profile section is fastened, and a measuring feeler. On turning the mock-up, e.g., through 1.5 degree intervals, it pushes the measuring feeler a certain distance which is recorded, and the recorded values may be then used for programming the operation of the programmed-finishing machine tool. A method was developed for the experimental determination of the relative displacements of the finishing instrument and the part being machined. The mathematical expression for the curve representing the displacement of the junction point between the blade being machined and the machining instrument is a difficult problem. However, in the case of an arc of a circle, e.g., for a concave surface, the displacement of the finishing instrument can be expressed analytically using trigonometric functions. (Author)
