AMPLITUDE SCINTILLATION STUDY.

Abstract

The presence of the atmosphere acts to degrade the transmission of optical signals. Natural turbulence in the atmosphere induces amplitude fluctuations on a propagated optical signal. The report describes an experimental program conducted to determine the characteristics of amplitude scintillation. The study was aimed at defining the degree of scintillation incurred and the associated frequency spectrum for a source emmersed in the atmosphere. Correlation studies were also undertaken to relate the scintillation characteristics to the meteorological parameters of the troposphere. Volume II reports the analysis procedures and calculations of the statistics of the experimental variables. Aperture effects and spectra shaping are analyzed and the results given. (Author)
