EFFECT OF VARIOUS POWDERS ON THE FUNCTIONING OF 20 MM AUTOMATIC GUN M1,
Abstract
Curves of bolt travel vs time were obtained for the purpose of determining the effect of various powders. Such curves were obtained with the French, British, and American ammunition. It was noted that with the American ammunition the bolt strikes the back plate, while with the French and British it does not. To further investigate the reason for this condition, piezo-electric records of powder pressure with the French, British, and American ammunition were obtained. The tests indicate that the powder used in the American ammunition gives higher pressures at the end of fire, and a higher rate of rise of pressure, and is not adapted to the existing mechanism of this gun; and that the gun could be easily adapted to this powder, by a slight reduction of the size of the gas holes in the gas cylinder screw.
