POSTATTACK RESEARCH. VOLUME III. REVIEWS AND ABSTRACTS OF RESEARCH ON THE DEMOGRAPHIC EFFECTS OF NUCLEAR WAR.

Abstract

The study provides formatted and comparative reviews of research on the demographic effects of nuclear war. Two areas of study are discussed; general postattack demographic characteristics of the survivors, and the effects of nuclear attack on certain specific skill types. In studies concerning general demographic characteristics including age, sex, race, religion, political beliefs, and the like, it was found that no operational countermeasures are available to offset possible imbalances. Many of the studies concerned with occupational skills, such as physicians, teachers, firemen, public officials and others, indicated the changes were not significant while others noted more than average losses in special skill groups. The results vary as a function of population sample size, calculative assumptions and procedures, and the details of the postulated attack. (Author)
