SYNTHESIS AND INVESTIGATION OF PROPARGYLACRYLATE POLYMERS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF PEROXY INITIATORS,

Abstract

Polymerization of propargylacrylate (PrA) and propargylmethacrylate PrMA) in bulk and dioxane solution was studied with benzoyl peroxide and azobisisobutyronitrile initiators at 60, 70 and 80C, and solubility and cross linking of the formed polymers were evaluated. Polymerization rates increased with temperature as shown, and the yield increased with 0.1-0.6 percent initiator used. Bulk polymerization resulted in formation of insoluble glassy polymers, and solution polymerization resulted in initial formation of linear and soluble polymers, which become insoluble when the yield of 35-40 percent is reached. IR-spectroscopy and determination of intrinsic viscosity revealed the presence of acetylenic and cyclic links in the linear chains of the soluble product and its conversion under cross linking. The results indicate that soluble polypropargylacrylate and polypropargylmethacrylate can be produced, and converted by thermal treating into cross linked resins. (Author)
