EFFICACY SELECTED DRUGS AS PROPHYLACTIC AGENTS AGAINST DIROFILARIA IMMITIS INFECTION OF DOGS.
Abstract
Chemoprophylaxis of infection-reinfection with Dirofilaria immitis was obtained with diethylcarbamazine (DEC) citrate (at a reduced concentration level) with pound dogs divided into two sets of 5 dogs each (experiment A). One set in experiment A received DEC citrate tablet, with the other set maintained as infected, nonmedicated controls. The dogs (experiment A) were euthanatized at 114 days after last injection of larvae. Adult heartworms were recovered from the infected, nonmedicated dogs. Worms were not found in the infected-reinfected, medicated set. The efficacy of Tiguvon, Tramisol, and DEC citrate liquid (experiment B) was also tested with 24 laboratory-standardized beagles divided into four sets of 6 dogs each. Each dog in experiment B infected sets received daily drug doses of either Tramisol, DEC citrate, or Tiguvon, with one remaining set maintained as infected, nonmedicated control. The dogs (experiment B) were euthanatized 138 to 155 days after injection of larvae. Adult heartworms were recovered from the infected, nonmedicated dogs. Worms were not found in the Tramisol or Tiguvon sets, but 2 worms were recovered in the DEC citrate set. Contraindication to the prophylactic use of DEC citrate was not observed clinically nor pathologically in experiments A and B. In experiment B there were contraindications to the use of Tramisol and Tiguvon both clinically and pathologically at the drug levels used in this experiment. (Author)
