ANALYTICAL DEFINITION OF THE CORNELL WAVE SUPERHEATER FLOW FIELD ENVIRONMENT.

Abstract

The method of characteristics has been used to define the flow fields commonly used at the Cornell Wave Superheater for nosetip ablation testing. The flow field properties were computed for the exhaust plumes produced by both the free jet and collector modes of operation. Both perfect gas and equilibrium air calculations were performed. The effect of different initial conditions at the collector exit plane, upon the flow field properties, was examined and the propagation of a possible collector shock wave out into the plume flow field was computed. Excellent agreement was obtained between the collector flow field calculations and the available rake data. The free jet flow field was simulated with an asymmetric, two-dimensional, characteristics calculation. The computed pitot pressure was in qualitative agreement with the free jet rake data. (Author)
