RADIATION-INDUCED LINE BROADENING OF THE PRINCIPAL SERIES OF SODIUM.

Abstract

Continuum radiation from a high-intensity flashtube was passed through sodium vapor in order to investigate the absorption spectra of high-lying sodium principal series transitions. The results indicate that the radiation from the source causes sufficient line broadening near the series limit so that the individual lines become nonresolvable. The number of lines observed is correlated with variations in the radiation field intensity. (Author)
