MECHANICAL AND THERMAL PHENOMENA IN SOLIDS.

Abstract

Briefly mentioned is research in four problems: (1) The electronic and magnetic properties of liquid metals containing transition metal paramagnetic ions has been deduced. Both localized and distributed moments were seen and a regular pattern was apparent. A theory has been developed to interpret the phenomena. (2) Precipitation and clustering of interstitial gas atoms in refractory metals has been studied using both internal friction and electron microscopy. (3) Diffusion of hydrogen in bcc metals has been investigated using the Snoek peak. Formation of hydrides in Nb and V has been correlated with studies of phase diagrams. (4) An investigation of anomalous self- and substitutional diffusion has been concluded. (Author)
