COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE CYTOPATHIC ACTIVITY OF SOME ARBOVIRUSES IN TISSUE CULTURES,
Abstract
The study of a large spectrum of cell cultures for the diagnosis of arboviruses according to the cytopathic effect has shown the possibility of using a number of cell types for carrying out such research. Varying degrees of cytopathic action were noted, as well as unequal terms for its manifestation in viruses belonging to different groups. The origination of cytopathic changes in early terms after infection (1-3 days) was noted among representatives of Group A viruses. Group B viruses brought about these changes on the 45h-6th day. On the basis of the times of appearance of cytopathic changes, cells may be divided into 3 groups. Universal cultures, in which the cytopathic action of all viruses was observed, were VNK-21 cells, the intertwined line of MED-14 and SPEV-44 cells. When SEK, MED-27 and Liv cells were infected by viruses of the 3 groups, no cytopathic changes were observed in a single one of the cell types. In the remaining types of cultures, cytopathic action was brought about by various viruses from different groups. (Author)
