STIMULATED AND SPONTANEOUS LIGHT SCATTERING.
Abstract
The report contains a series of six papers on high resolution grating spectroscopy and interferometric measurements of light scattering. Close-in satellite line due to a high quality diffraction grating are investigated. It is shown that it is necessary to consider these ghost lines even with the best available gratings. Two papers deal with spontaneous scattering. In one the speed of sound in a number of liquids is determined as a function of temperature and relaxation effects are studied. In the other the Krishman effect, index of refraction measurements and sound speeds measured through the glass-rubber transition temperature in methacrylate plastics indicate that strains are only partially removed by annealing. The speed of sound in CO2, CH4, N2 and SF6 are measured as a function of density. It is shown that with careful control of transverse mode structure, stimulated measurements can yield precise and accurate results. Some disagreement is found between speeds from experimentally and those extrapolated from ultra sonic results. Two papers giving a review of stimulated scattering results are included. (Author)
