NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS IN ATHEROSCLEROSIS: PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGICAL IMPLICATIONS AND PERSPECTIVES.

Abstract

The present status of the psychosocial factors pertinent to atherosclerosis especially in the coronary artery disease of the young patient is discussed in this report. Some integrative CS and peripheral autonomic mechanisms as determined by biologic experimental models have been described which influence lipid metabolism, blood clotting and atherosclerosis. Relevant studies of neuropharmacologic attempts to alter the above processes have been reviewed. It is obvious that no satisfactory agent or therapeutic regimen exists to prevent these pathologic events except those agents which might reverse the sclerotic process. These remain also for the pharmacologist to discover. (Author)
