APPLICATION OF X-RAY SPECTROSCOPY IN GLASS AND GLASS-CRYSTAL MATERIALS.
Abstract
The report discusses techniques to study chemical properties in glass and glass-crystal materials. The optimum system turned out to be an x-ray line source with flat-crystal, divergent beam optics and a dual detector system to monitor the incident x-ray beam. This system was used to study K edges from Ti to Cu, albeit slightly modified to provide a helium atmosphere for the study of the lighter atoms. These data were of sufficient quality to be subjected to a theoretical analysis. The MO theory was extensively used in studies of many first-row transition metal compounds. Since no reliable x-ray absorption technique was developed for the study of light elements (Mg through Cl), an electron microprobe study as initiated for this purpose.
