IONIC CONDUCTION IN BETA-ALUMINA.
Abstract
The investigation was undertaken to determine ionic transport characteristics in beta-alumina and between beta-alumina and adjacent phases. Polycrystalline beta-alumina disks were used for emf measurements of sodium activity in sodium amalgams of concentration 0.52 to 4.0 atom percent at 30C. No detectable electronic conduction of beta-alumina was observed. The current behavior, upon imposing a constant voltage source across the beta-alumina, was measured and found to decrease with the square root of time. The formation of metallic, sodium bridges or dendrites were observed to form across polycrystalline, beta-alumina disks. This could lead to degradation of beta-alumina when used as an electrolyte or separator in electrochemical cells. (Author)
