DETERMINATION OF THE MALARIA VECTOR IN PANGUTARAN ISLAND, SULU ARCHIPELAGO, REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES.
Abstract
The purposes of the investigation were: (a) to determine the malaria prevalence rate in an island where the known malaria vector in the country is absent and (b) to study the anopheles mosquito fauna and attempt to incriminate the vector of malaria in the area. Blood smears from the inhabitants were taken and examined in Manila. Mosquito traps were set with cows as baits and catches were sorted according to genus and species prior to dissection for oocysts and sporozoites. Dippings on rock holes for mosquito larvae were also done and found to be mostly Anopheles litoralis. Prevalence rate of malaria in the island is about 9 per cent with infants showing the highest rates suggestive of active malaria transmission.
