GEOGRAPHIC COORDINATE RECKONING SYSTEM WITH AUTOMATIC ADJUSTMENT FOR NAVIGATIONAL CORRECTIONS,

Abstract

Automatic reckoning is at present virtually the only autonomous method of navigation. Its principle consists in the systematic computation of the geographical coordinates of the ship on the basis of information about elements of its motion-track angle and speed. The accuracy of reckoning primarily depends on the accuracy of navigation instruments after taking into account various navigation corrections such as the correction factor for speed, the speed deviation of the gyrocompass, the angle of wind drift and the angle of current drift. Formulas for these corrections are presented and it is shown that their calculation can be automated. Hence also it is possible to automatically obtain data on the track angle and true speed by solving the pertinent equations with the aid of a special-purpose computer.
