STUDIES IN THE ISOTHIANAPHTHENE SERIES.

Abstract

In 1966 the author reported the discovery that the little known heterocycle isothianaphthene could be synthesized readily by the dehydration of an easily prepared sulfoxide. The principal objectives of the work described in the present report extend the sulfoxide dehydration reaction to the synthesis of other unusual but related sulfur heterocycles, and attempt the synthesis of various sulfones in the isothianaphthene series, especially in view of the fact that such compounds might be somewhat stabilized by an unusual type of sulfonyl conjugation.
