MODERNIZATION OF GUN TUBE BORING FACILITIES.

Abstract

The report covers the development, construction requirements, and application to manufacture of gun tube boring facilities patterned after the principles established for trepanning. The purpose of the project was to update existing gun boring equipment in order to reduce operating costs, improve boring precision, and reduce floor space requirements. Since conventional methods of pack reaming are currently operating at peak efficiency, new tooling, a new coolant system, and improvements in the machinery for 105mm and 155mm cannon tubes has resulted in a 65% reduction in operational time coupled with an 85% cost savings in tool maintenance as compared with conventional pack reaming methods.
