A COMPARISON OF EXTRACTION SOLVENTS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF COMPOSITION A-3 EXPLOSIVE.

Abstract

Three solvents - benzene, aliphatic naphtha, and carbon tetrachloride - were evaluated as extraction solvents for the separation of wax and RDX in Composition A-3 explosive. Control samples of wax and RDX prepared in the laboratory and samples from nine blends of Composition A-3 were analyzed using standardized procedures for each solvent. Benzene was not satisfactory; the other solvents were acceptable. Laboratory technicians, production materials, and simple laboratory facilities were used throughout the work. Detailed extraction procedures are included. (Author)
