MODERNIZATION IN A REGIONAL CONTEXT: PRETHEORY AND PRACTICE IN WESTERN NIGERIA.

Abstract

Modernization, viewed in a regional setting, is a process resulting jointly in areal integration and differentiation. A conceptual spatial model of modernization is proposed. The arguments developed are applied to Western Nigeria in relation to the location of agricultural production, the development of a system of periodic food markets, and the unequal modernization of the large preindustrial Yoruba towns. Measurement of the spatial aspects of modernization is achieved through the use of principal components analysis with components scores, regression analysis with residuals, and trend surface fitting.
