Handbook of Geophysics and Space Environments. Chapter 5. Precipitation and Clouds
Abstract
The need for geophysical and astrophysical information is critical for the design of aircraft, missiles, and satellites. The HANDBOOK OF GEOPHYSICS AND SPACE ENVIRONMENTS is an attempt by the U. S. Air Force to organize some of these data into compact form. The water content of the atmosphere is discussed in this chapter. Data are provided on the frequency of occurrence of various surface rates of rainfall, hail, the vertical distribution of precipitation intensity, and the particle size distribution in widespread precipitation. Information on the types and limitations of cloud data and of the distribution and water content of clouds is included.
