ORTHOGONAL DECOMPOSITION AND SEISMIC ARRAYS.

Abstract

Non-trigonometric orthogonal systems were investigated with particular regard to seismic applications and computer implementation. Most emphasis was given to systems of functions which assume only the binary values +1 and -1, and in particular, the Walsh functions. Algorithms for their efficient machine generation were devised and applied to the problem of data reduction. Compression rations of 6:1 are easily obtained, and much higher ratios are possible with more refined techniques (error-correcting codes, etc). Applications are given to block quantized data.
