REPORT OF LINAC OPERATION: 1 JULY-31 DECEMBER 1969.
Abstract
The operation and use of the NRL 60-MeV Electron Linear Accelerator is described for the period 1 July - 31 December 1969. Progress on the research program of the Linac Branch is discussed, including electron scattering, activation analysis, and observations of gamma rays from photonuclear reactions. Use of the linac as a pulsed neutron source continues to expand. Neutron capture measurements of resonances in Yb, Er, and Pd isotopes are described, as are gamma-ray multiplicity measurements on Hf and Nd. Delivery of a 12-kiloword, 16-bit computer and magnetic tape peripheral completes a new data-acquisition system except for various interface electronics either on order or being built. Experiments were performed showing that the linac bremsstrahlung beam could be used to accurately determine the number of warheads in a closed container for potential MIRV ground inspection. (Author)
