MECHANISM FOR THE ORIGIN OF THE VAN ALLEN BELT.

Abstract

A model of the Van Allen belt is proposed in which the resonance acceleration of the exospheric plasma particles by stochastic electromagnetic waves plays an important role. The differential energy spectrum for trapped protons is derived in the energy range approximately equals 200 keV to a few MeV for L shells between about 2 and 6 earth radii. (Author)
