VLF EMISSIONS AND ELECTRON INSTABILITIES.

Abstract

Current research into VLF emissions and the electron instabilities which cause them are reviewed in this report. Data have been gathered by OGO 1, 3, and 5 that have led to the identification of a type of narrow bandwidth chorus, now called banded chorus. Purely electrostatic modes have also been seen and studied in detail, especially on OGO 5. Observation of triggered emissions and the nonlinear theories invoked to explain the emissions are included.
