INSTABILITY OF MAGNETOHYDROSTATIC ATMOSPHERES FROM MAGNETIC BOUYANCY,

Abstract

Parker (1955) introduced 'magnetic buoyancy' as a possible mechanism for sunspot formation. In this paper, it is shown how magnetic buoyancy can cause instability in horizontally uniform magnetohydrostatic atmospheres. The neutral oscillations in such an atmosphere are examined.
