FLUID TIMER.

Abstract

In past work consideration was given to various chemical and mechanical means of providing sterilization. As an outgrowth of this program, techniques were conceived, fabricated, and tested which used a silicone fluid flow through a porous metal disc to provide controlled reliable 30 day timing. Test work has revealed that reliable, reproducible flow rates can be achieved between -20F and 120F with flow rates which vary by no more than 2 to 1 over a 100F temperature span. Since this still provides a fair degree of uncertainty in field sterilization situations, work was undertaken to reduce the temperature dependence. A technique was conceived which used a bimetallic element to throttle the flow of fluid on the downstream side of the porous restrictor. A concept miniature design was proposed and testing performed with a workhorse model. (Author)
