MYOPIA INDUCED BY OCULAR INSTILLATION OF PHYSOSTIGMINE.

Abstract

An 0.5% solution of physostigmine (eserine) eye drops caused myopia up to 7.50 D 30 minutes after subjects received the drug. Visual acuity decreased down to 20/400 at drug peak. The average effect of 2 drops was greater than 1 drop. There was no consensual effect in the eye not receiving physostigmine. Requiring subjects to perform a demanding near visual task resulted in greater myopia than occurred when they were given a distant visual task. (Author)
