MICROWAVE AND OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF CRYSTALS.

Abstract

The area of work during the period reported was in the characterization by magneto-optical methods of the oxygen-vacancy centers in MgO and CaO. The most important result was a detailed Faraday-rotation study of the MgO F band, at 4.9 e.v. An excited-state spin-orbit parameter of -12 reciprocal cm. was established. The relationship of the almost coincident F sup 1 band to the F band was clarified. Additional Faraday-rotation experiments were completed on the trigonal 'R-like' centers in MgO, and on the CaO F band. An additional project was a detailed experimental and theoretical investigation of the phonon structure of the CaO F band, both in emission and absorption. (Author)
